Frequently asked questions

A basic level of riding experience is strongly recommended. You should be comfortable handling a motorcycle on hilly, uneven, and off-road terrain the Spiti bike trip includes steep mountain climbs, loose gravel patches, narrow cliff-edge roads, and high-altitude conditions. First-time Himalayan riders are welcome provided they are confident on a bike and in good physical health. The HimTrek trip leader and mechanic ride alongside the group throughout, so no one is ever left behind.

The best time for the Spiti bike trip is June to October. Roads are clear, all high-altitude villages are accessible, and the weather is at its most stable. July–August brings occasional rain in the lower Himalayas but Spiti's rain shadow keeps the valley largely dry. September and early October offer crystal-clear skies, dramatic autumn colours in the orchards, and the most photogenic landscapes. The route is not recommended between November and May due to snow closure of mountain passes and the Chitkul access road.

Altitude sickness (AMS) is a genuine concern on the Spiti bike trip — the route reaches up to 4,587 m at Komik. HimTrek's itinerary is structured for gradual acclimatisation, with a two-night stay in Kaza before the highest-altitude excursion day. The backup vehicle carries oxygen cylinders and a fully stocked First Aid kit throughout. Riders are advised to stay well hydrated, avoid alcohol in the first two days at altitude, and inform the trip leader immediately if they experience headaches, nausea, or dizziness. Descent is always the safest remedy if symptoms worsen.

Yes, HimTrek offers a Bring Your Own Bike (BYOB) variant for riders who prefer their personal motorcycle. This option is priced separately as it excludes the Royal Enfield Himalayan, helmet, and fuel. All other inclusions accommodation, meals, trip leader, mechanic, permits, and backup vehicle remain unchanged. Please note that fuel costs, spare parts, and any repair or damage charges for your own bike during the trip are entirely your responsibility.

You must carry the following documents on the Spiti bike trip keep both physical copies and digital backups on your phone:
