About the Trek

Tatharna Trek, also officially written as Thatharna Trek, is a short and scenic Himalayan trek in the Dharamshala region of Himachal Pradesh. Located around the Kharota area, the trail takes you through forested slopes before opening into a broad mountain meadow with views across the Kangra Valley and Dhauladhar Range. The Kangra district administration describes Thatharna as a lesser-known alternative to the more crowded Triund Trek.

Unlike long high-altitude expeditions, the Tatharna Trek in Himachal Pradesh is suited to travellers looking for a relatively short mountain experience with camping, open landscapes and impressive Himalayan views. The official Himachal Pradesh trekking database lists the Khartola–Thatharna route at around 2,676 metres with a medium difficulty grade. The trail is particularly appealing if you want to experience Dharamshala trekking away from the busiest routes while still staying close to the town.

Tatharna Trek Altitude & Height
Tatharna Trek altitude is approximately 2,600–2,676 metres, depending on the exact point considered on the route. The Himachal Pradesh Government's trekking database lists Khartola–Thatharna at 2,676 metres, while the Kangra district administration describes Thatharna at approximately 2,600 metres. In feet, this is roughly 8,500–8,780 feet. Because the trek reaches a moderate elevation rather than an extreme high-altitude pass, it is much more accessible than many multi-day Himalayan expeditions. For another short Himalayan experience in the Dharamshala region, see the Kareri Lake Trek.

Tatharna Trek Distance The exact Tatharna Trek distance depends on where the trekking section begins. There are several published walks from the Kharota side to Thatharna, which are of around 5-6 km in each direction, that is, the total trekking length is around 10-12 km.

Tatharna Trek Difficulty The overall difficulty of the Tatharna Trek is easy to moderate, but officially it's considered to be a medium trek in Khartola,Thatharna in the Himachal Pradesh trekking database. Some parts of the trail will be a moderate or steep ascent through forest, but the route is short in comparison to longer Himalayan treks. Weather can also be a factor in difficulty. The trail can be more difficult during the monsoons or snow during winter. Trekkers looking for a longer and more challenging route in the same Dhauladhar region can consider the Indrahar Pass Trek.

Tatharna Trek Route

The popular route for the Tatharna Trek is: Dharamshala to Kharota Village to Forest Trail to Thatharna Meadow The method used may vary with operator and roadway conditions. The path starts through the forest and slowly heads out to a meadow area. High up, there are more views of mountains and Kangra Valley.

Best Time for Tatharna Trek Tatharna Trek season varies based on experiences. The best time to trek is from March–June and September–November. These are generally recommended times to trek based on weather conditions and visibility. Spring generally brings pleasant weather and greener landscapes.

March to June – Pleasant Weather & Green Landscapes

  • Comfortable temperatures for trekking.

  • Forests and meadows become greener.

  • Good conditions for camping and photography.

  • Dhauladhar views can be particularly attractive on clear days.

July to August – Monsoon Conditions

  • The pastoral scene becomes verdant and green.
  • Some areas of the trail may be slippery in the rain.

  • Road and trail conditions may be impacted by heavy rain.

September to November – Clear Mountain Views

  • Clearer skies in general after the monsoons.
  • Ideal photo and camping weather.
  • For those who prefer not to deal with the heat, it's a pleasant season for travelers to enjoy.

December to February – Winter & Snow

Tatharna Trek snowfall experience can make the trail particularly scenic during winter.
However, snow and freezing conditions can change the difficulty of the trek. Winter departures should therefore be planned according to actual snow conditions, trail accessibility and appropriate equipment.

Tatharna Trek Weather

Tatharna Trek weather can change quickly because the trail climbs from the lower Dharamshala region into the Dhauladhar foothills.

During spring and summer, daytime trekking can be comfortable, while evenings at the campsite can become considerably cooler.
During the monsoon, rainfall can make forest trails slippery.
Winter brings colder temperatures and the possibility of snowfall, which can transform the trail conditions.
For this reason, trekkers should always carry a proper rain layer and warm clothing even during the warmer trekking months.
