The road journey to Spiti Valley presents its own set of challenges and thrills. The beauty of Spiti shines like a diamond under the sun during the height of summer when most of India experiences unacceptably high temperatures. The routes involve navigating through high mountain passes, narrow roads, and hairpin bends. The thrill of driving on these roads is matched by the stunning vistas that unfold at every turn. Be prepared for a bumpy ride, unpredictable weather, and high-altitude conditions.

You will experience both beauty and risk at once as you navigate the perilous curves that lead from Manali to the Spiti Valley. Keep in mind to pay attention to your surroundings because they are changing beautifully. You’ll note that the landscapes here transition from green to brown.

Besides its captivating landscapes, Spiti Valley boasts natural wonders that leave visitors spellbound. ChandraTal Lake, also known as the Moon Lake, is a pristine high-altitude lake surrounded by majestic mountains.

Day 1: Arrival in Manali

Make your arrival in Manali on day one. Once you get there, register for your stay at the campsite in Manali. Enjoy a leisurely day by visiting Manali. Visit local attractions, stroll through Manali's streets, and discover the area's natural splendour. Take some time to explore the picturesque town and its attractions, such as Hadimba Temple and the Mall Road, before embarking on your journey. In the evening, you may go cafe hopping in Old Manali and take part in live music, bonfires, and other fun activities. Dinner will be provided on-site. Camp out for the night beside the river.

Day 2: Manali to Kaza via Atal Tunnel and Kunzum La

Begin your road trip in Manali and head towards Atal Tunnel. Atal Tunnel, named after the former Prime Minister of India, Atal Bihari Vajpayee, is a major highlight of the route. It is one of the longest road tunnels in the world and provides a year-round connectivity between Manali and Lahaul-Spiti Valley. After passing through the Atal Tunnel, you will take the road to the right side. As you continue your journey, you'll pass through the villages of Gramphu and Batal. These areas are known for their scenic beauty and offer opportunities to take short breaks, have refreshments, and interact with fellow travellers. The next major landmark on your road trip is Kunzum La, a high mountain pass situated at an elevation of 4,590 metres. It is a significant gateway to the Spiti Valley. Take some time to soak in the panoramic views of the surrounding mountains and visit the Kunzum Devi Temple, which is located near the pass. After crossing Kunzum La, you'll arrive in the beautiful village of Losar, which serves as an entry point to Spiti Valley. Continue your journey to reach Kaza, the administrative headquarters of Spiti Valley. Kaza is a charming town of Tibetan Buddhist monasteries like Key Monastery and Tabo Monastery. Kaza serves as the basecamp to further explore Spiti Valley. Stay overnight at Kaza.

Day 3: Visit Dhankar Monastery & Pin Valley, Overnight stay at Kaza

Wake up and have a fulfilling breakfast, and get ready to explore more of Spiti Valley. After leaving Kaza, head towards Dhankar Monastery located approximately 34 kilometres southeast of Kaza. Dhankar Monastery is perched on a cliff at an altitude of around 3,890 metres and offers panoramic views of the Spiti Valley. The ancient monastery, with its unique architecture and vibrant Buddhist art, is a significant cultural and religious site in the region. Take your time to explore the monastery, admire the stunning vistas, and learn about its rich history and heritage. From Dhankar, continue your journey to Pin Valley, which is renowned for its diverse flora, fauna, and picturesque landscapes. The Pin Valley National Park, a designated wildlife sanctuary, is a major attraction in the area. The park is home to several animal species, including the elusive snow leopard, ibex, and Himalayan blue sheep. Within the Pin Valley, visit Mudh Village, the last motorable village in the valley. It is a quaint and charming village with traditional mud houses, surrounded by lush green fields and snow-capped peaks. Take a leisurely walk around the village, interact with the friendly locals. After exploring Dhankar Monastery and Pin Valley, make your way back to Kaza, where you can relax, enjoy local cuisine, and prepare for further adventures in Spiti Valley or your onward

Day 4: Visit Chicham bridge, Hikkim, Komic and Langza, Overnight stay at Kaza

Begin your day in Kaza, the base town for exploring the surrounding areas. Fuel up with a hearty breakfast before setting off. Drive towards Chicham village, which is located approximately 20 kilometres from Kaza. Chicham is known for its thrilling suspension bridge, one of the highest in Asia. Enjoy the scenic views of the Spiti Valley from the bridge and take some time to appreciate the engineering marvel. From Chicham, head to Hikkim, a small village famous for having the world's highest post office. Interact with the locals, send postcards to your loved ones, and collect unique postal stamps as a souvenir. Next, proceed to Komic, one of the highest inhabited villages in the world. Marvel at the stunning mountain vistas as you drive through the rugged terrain. Explore Komic's ancient Tangyud Monastery, known for its rich Buddhist heritage and panoramic views of the surrounding valleys. After Komic, continue your journey to Langza, a picturesque village famous for its towering Buddha statue and breathtaking landscapes. Enjoy a leisurely stroll around the village, and immerse yourself in the tranquil ambiance. As the day comes to an end, drive back to Kaza for an overnight stay.

Day 5: Kaza to Chandratal via Losar and Kunzum La, Overnight stay at Chandratal

Start your journey early in the morning from Kaza. Drive from Kaza to Losar, a small village located approximately 58 kilometres away. Take a break at Losar and soak in the serene ambiance of the village. From Losar, continue your journey towards Kunzum La, a high mountain pass. After crossing Kunzum La, drive towards Chandratal Lake. The road from Kunzum La to Chandratal is approximately 14 kilometres long and takes you through breathtaking landscapes. Reach the lake and spend the evening admiring the serene beauty of the surroundings, watching the changing colours of the lake as the sun sets. Enjoy the tranquillity and peacefulness of this remote location. Camp near the Chandratal lake. Camping near the lake offers a unique experience and allows you to fully immerse yourself in the natural beauty of the area.

Day 6: Back to Manali

Today marks the last day of the road trip and you will be driving back towards Manali via Kaza. Take some more views of the majestic Spiti Valley and admire it one last time as you make your way towards Manali. Cherish the stunning landscapes en route. You will reach Manali by late afternoon. Say adios to your summer Spiti road trip and go back with the bag full of memories.
