Itinerary

This journey will take five hours. Manali – Rohtang pass (3978m) – Chatru (3100m)/ Daddar Bridge or Chota Dara in 5-6 hours. Adaptation moment!

  • Chhatru to Chota Dara it is just 17 kilometers. We drive along the right bank of Chandra River.
  • On the opposite side of Chandra River, Chhota Shigri glacier, and above all some remarkable peaks are tremendous.
  • There are a few tea joints at the point of arrival to Chhota Dara. Leaving Chota Dara behind us we proceed along the right bank of Chandra River.
  • Once more view is offered to Bara Shigri glacier from left side. Moreover we find there Papsura (6451m), Dharamsura (6446) and many more peaks towering above it since this 12 km long glacier happens to be longest one in Himachal Pradesh.
  • Crossing bridge soon after Batal, we climb towards Kunzum la following small stream above pass.
  • Arriving at pass gives glimpse of Spiti valley that extends for 170 kms towards south. Take a path going up to lake for 8 km; approach big meadows - favorite area with multitude of shepherd huts.
  • After passing and crossing a long stretch of stony ground and small stream arrive at lake. Across Chandra River most intriguing sight presents itself with Samudra Tapu glacier, North Dakka glacier,
  • South Dakka glacier along with Silver glacier. Above are the glaciers within the region Betten, and Kunzum Pass.

A long exhausted trek but well worth, because occasionally trekkers encounters patches of green pastureland. This stretch is about 14 to 16 km. The trail starts with a series of ups and downs through steep ravine and boulders - stream fields. As you progress, a flat grassy land, which slopes up to snow, clad ridge. Snow cock can be heard has heard and even sighted, if you are lucky. After 3 hrs the trail winds down a knoll, which has a steep precipice to the river far down to the left. Cross the stream if the water is low or find Snow Bridge up near the source. Or camp and cross next morning as earliest.

  • Hike through a narrow valley flanked on either side by snow-capped mountains.
  • Start your hike early as you must cross the river early in the day while the water is still low.
  • After crossing the river, a short walk later, the valley opens up onto a wide plateau where you will find a beautiful grassy area to set up camp.

  • Start early this morning from camp to the 7 km long Baralacha La pass, which has three rivers originating there Chandra flowing to the south, Baga flowing upstream Lahaul and Unam flowing towards Zanskar.
  • The trail offers spectacular views of the M-4, the highest river in the Mulkila range, and the Keolang range of the Great Himalayas.
  • At the pass, join the Manali-Leh highway and drive to Paseo where you will stay overnight in camp.

  • Today we leave the camp and head towards Jispa and then Sattingri.
  • From here we start our hike, descending to the Baga River, passing small villages on the way.
  • Just below Gamling we cross a bridge over the Baga River and climb up through barley fields to the small and pretty village of Lapchan.
  • We follow the road to Khardang Gompa with amazing views of Kieran in the distance and reach Balbog. We camp near Khardang Gompa.

  • From the camp we start climbing along the slopes of Baabog, famous for winter skiing. We can see the peak of Chalkök and the Baga River valley to Tod valley.
  • Just before the pass, there is a steeper climb and through a small valley to the pass. Great all-round views.
  • We descend along the gondola slope to the village of Kandan. Nice campsite.

Short walk to road head at near Khindang village and drive to Sissu - Rohtang pass to Manali. Trip ends.
