The trek spans 28 kilometers, typically requiring 5 days and 6 nights to complete, and adventurers best experience it between December and March.

In winter, the Brahmatal Trek transforms into a mystical beauty, and thick layers o snow completely cover the entire region. Trekkers can anticipate seeing huge stretches of white wilderness, frozen mountain lakes, and dense forests of oak and rhododendron trees. Brahmatal Lake, a frozen lake with a glistening clarity that gives off breathtaking reflections of the surrounding peaks, is one of the trek’s highlights. 

The trek offers panoramic views of some of the most famous Himalayan peaks, including Trishul, Nanda Ghunti, and Chaukhamba, among others. Furthermore, trekkers also get to experience the local culture and traditional architecture of houses and temples as they pass through small villages and interact with the friendly inhabitants.

Itinerary

Day 1: Rishikesh/Dehradun to Lohajung

  • Arrive in Rishikesh/Dehradun, which can be reached by road from Delhi or other major cities in North India.
  • Depart from Rishikesh/Dehradun and take a scenic road journey towards Lohajung. 
  • The road journey to Lohajung can take around 10-12 hours.
  • Check into your guesthouse, and enjoy a peaceful evening in the serene Himalayan village.
  • Acclimatize to the altitude and prepare yourselves for the trek tomorrow.

Day 2: Lohajung to Gujrani Campsite

  • Start your trek from Lohajung, which is your base camp for the Brahmatal Trek. 
  • Continue your trek through lush forests and terraced fields.
  • Resume your trek through beautiful rhododendron forests and meadows.
  • It’s a 6km long trek which takes around 4-5 hrs of trekking.
  • Arrive at Gujrani, a serene campsite nestled in the wilderness.
  • Reach your campsite, rest, relax, and prepare for the upcoming day of the trek.

Day 3: Gujrani Campsite to Tilandi via Bekaltal Lake

  • Trekking from Gujrani Campsite to Tilandi via Bekaltal Lake is the highlight of the Brahmatal Trek as it’s a beautiful segment of the entire trek.
  • Start your trek from Gujrani Campsite and make your way towards Bekaltal Lake. 
  • Arrive at Bekaltal Lake, a clear and picturesque lake surrounded by oak and rhododendron trees.
  • Resume your trek, leaving Bekaltal Lake behind, as you ascend towards Tilandi, which is a scenic campsite.
  • Arrive in your tents and get ready to rest after the 7 km of trekking on day 3. 
  • After dinner, enjoy the tranquil atmosphere in the midst of nature.

Day 4: Tilandi to Brahmatal Lake and Brahmatal Peak and back to Tilandi

  • Start your day very early, ideally before sunrise, to maximize daylight hours.
  • Begin your trek from Tilandi towards Brahmatal Lake.
  • The trail is 9 km long and involves a steep ascent as you head towards the lake, passing through snow-covered terrain.
  • Reach Brahmatal Lake, a stunning frozen lake, and take some time to enjoy the surroundings.
  • Take in all the mesmerizing views of the peak and snap as many memories as you can.
  • Start your descent from Brahmatal Peak back to Brahmatal Lake.
  • From there, begin your return journey to Tilandi.
  • Arrive back at the campsite in Tilandi, ideally before nightfall.

Day 5: Tilandi to Lohajung via Daldum

  • Day 5 is a 9 km long descent which will take 5-6 hours.
  • Start your trek from Tilandi towards Daldum.
  • The trail initially involves descending from Tilandi and then ascending towards Daldum.
  • Reach Daldum, a beautiful high-altitude meadow with fantastic views of the surrounding mountains.
  • Take some time to rest and enjoy the scenery.
  • Continue your descent from Daldum as you make your way towards Lohajung. 
  • As you approach Lohajung, you'll notice the terrain becoming more forested and the surroundings changing.
  • Keep a steady pace as you head back to the base camp.
  • Arrive in Lohajung and check in your guesthouse.

Day 6:  Lohajung to Rishikesh/Dehradun

  • Check out from your accommodation in Lohajung and prepare for a long day of travel. 
  • Start your journey by road from Lohajung which can take around 10-12 hours. 
  • Continue your road trip, taking in the scenic views as you descend from the Himalayas to the plains.
  • The drive will take you through picturesque landscapes and winding mountain roads.
  • Arrive in Rishikesh or Dehradun by 6 pm in the evening.
  • Say goodbye to your fellow trekkers and the winter adventure!

The trek is easy to moderate, so there is nothing extremely dangerous to be concerned about. While it is not the most challenging trek in the Indian Himalayas, it still requires a reasonable level of fitness as you will be ascending and descending through various terrains.
