Itinerary

Begin your journey early morning from Haridwar or Rishikesh with a scenic 260 km drive along the confluence of Alaknanda and Bhagirathi rivers. The route takes you through Devprayag, Srinagar, Rudraprayag, and Karnaprayag, offering spectacular views of the Garhwal Himalayas. Pass through charming hill towns and witness the changing landscape from plains to mountains. The drive takes approximately 9-10 hours with stops for meals and photography. Reach Joshimath by evening, a town situated at 6,150 ft that serves as the gateway to several Himalayan expeditions. Check into your hotel and rest for the night, preparing for the trek ahead.

After an early breakfast, drive 20 km to Govindghat (6,000 ft), the starting point of your trek. Complete the necessary permits and registrations before beginning your journey. The initial 4 km can be covered by shared jeeps to Pulna village, saving time and energy. From Pulna, trek 9 km along the well-defined stone pathway following the Pushpawati River. The trail gradually ascends through villages, waterfalls, and lush forests. Cross several bridges and enjoy views of cascading streams. After 4-5 hours of trekking, reach Ghangharia (10,200 ft), the base camp for both Valley of Flowers and Hemkund Sahib. Check into your accommodation and explore this small settlement in the evening.

Start early after breakfast for the much-anticipated Valley of Flowers trek. The 4 km trail from Ghangharia gradually ascends through dense forests before opening into the magnificent valley. As you enter this UNESCO World Heritage Site, be mesmerized by the explosion of colors from over 300 species of alpine flowers including blue poppies, cobra lilies, brahma kamal, and countless others. The valley stretches for about 5 km with the Pushpawati River flowing through it. Spend the entire day exploring different sections of the valley, photographing the vibrant meadows against the backdrop of snow-capped peaks. The valley is also home to rare wildlife including the Himalayan black bear and snow leopard. Return to Ghangharia by evening after covering 10-12 km round trip.

Wake up before dawn for an optional but highly recommended visit to Hemkund Sahib, one of the highest Gurudwaras in the world at 15,200 ft. The 6 km steep trail is challenging but well-paved with steps. The ascent takes 3-4 hours through alpine meadows and glacial terrain. Reach the serene glacial lake surrounded by seven peaks, with the Gurudwara reflecting in its crystal-clear waters. Pay your respects at this sacred Sikh shrine and enjoy the free langar (community meal). The pristine lake and surrounding peaks create an ethereal atmosphere. Begin your descent after spending time at this spiritual haven, returning to Ghangharia by afternoon. Rest and prepare for the return journey the next day.

After breakfast, begin your descent from Ghangharia to Pulna, retracing the 9 km trail through the valley. The downward journey takes about 3-4 hours, allowing you to capture any missed views from the ascent. From Pulna, take a shared jeep or trek the remaining 4 km to Govindghat. Board your vehicle for the drive back to Joshimath, reaching by late afternoon. Check into your hotel and enjoy a comfortable night's rest after the mountain adventure. Explore the local market or visit the ancient Narsingh Temple if time permits.

Start early for the return journey to Haridwar or Rishikesh. The 260 km drive takes you back through the same scenic route along the river valleys. Stop at Devprayag to witness the confluence of Alaknanda and Bhagirathi rivers forming the Ganges. Enjoy lunch at one of the roadside restaurants serving local Garhwali cuisine. Reach Haridwar or Rishikesh by evening, concluding your memorable journey to the Valley of Flowers with a heart full of nature's wonders and spiritual experiences.
