About this activity

The Valley of Flowers Trek is where dreams and reality merge into one breathtaking canvas of color and serenity. Tucked in Uttarakhand’s Chamoli district, this UNESCO World Heritage Site sits gracefully at 12,000 ft – an alpine meadow that bursts into bloom every monsoon. Imagine walking through a valley draped in over 300 species of exotic wildflowers – blue poppies, cobra lilies, Himalayan bellflowers, and the revered brahma kamal – all swaying under the Himalayan mist.

But this trek is not just about floral beauty. It’s about experiencing divinity in nature – crossing sacred confluences like Devprayag and Rudraprayag, staying in the quaint settlement of Ghangaria, and hiking up to Hemkund Sahib (15,200 ft), one of the world’s highest Gurudwaras.

The Legend Behind the Valley

Long before explorers stumbled upon it, locals believed the Valley of Flowers was the celestial abode of gods and fairies. They called itNandan Kanan – the divine garden of Lord Indra.

In 1931, three British mountaineers – Frank Smythe, Eric Shipton, and R.L. Holdsworth – discovered this valley while returning from a Kamet expedition. Smythe described it as “a land where the entire valley seemed to be alive with color.” Since then, it has fascinated trekkers, botanists, and dreamers from around the world.

Even today, when you walk through its misty trails and floral carpets, it feels like stepping into a mythical world – untouched, unhurried, and infinitely pure.

Itinerary

  • The adventure doesn't begin at the mountains it begins the moment you leave Rishikesh. Board your vehicle and roll out along the legendary Badrinath Road, one of India's most dramatic highway drives.
  • As the city fades behind you, the Ganga transforms before your eyes from a serene, temple-flanked river into a wild, roaring torrent crashing through ancient gorges.
  • You'll pass through four of the five sacred Prayags — Devprayag, Rudraprayag, Karnaprayag, and Nandprayag — each confluence a collision of rivers, mythology, and mountain grandeur. Stop, breathe it in, photograph it.
  • Arrive in Joshimath by evening, check into your guesthouse, and let dinner ease you into the pace of the mountains. Tomorrow, the real climb begins.

Stay: Guest House, Joshimath   |   Meals: Tea & Snacks + Dinner   |   Altitude: 6,150 ft   |   Distance: 250 km by road   |   Duration: ~9–10 hrs drive

  • Early breakfast, then we drive 20 km to Govindghat and hop a shared jeep to Poolna your trailhead and the gateway to everything that lies ahead.
  • The 9 km trek to Ghangaria follows the Pushpawati River through forests alive with birdsong, past snack dhabas serving hot chai and parathas, and along stone-paved paths worn smooth by countless pilgrim feet.
  • At the 5 km mark, the village of Bhyundar opens up and behind it, the immense bulk of Hathi Parvat fills the sky. Pause here. This is your first proper Himalayan moment.
  • By dusk, you'll arrive at Ghangaria (10,003 ft) a tiny hamlet that serves as base camp for both Valley of Flowers and Hemkund Sahib. Hot dinner, warm beds, and cool mountain air await.

Stay: Guest House, Ghangaria   |   Meals: Breakfast + Packed Lunch + Evening Snacks + Dinner  |  Altitude: 10,003 ft   |   Distance: Trek 9 km + Road 24 km   |   Duration: ~6–7 hrs trek, 1 hr drive

  • Wake up to mountain air and a 7 AM breakfast. Today is the day you've come for.
  • The 4 km trail from Ghangaria to the valley entrance winds through forests and over the Pushpawati River — cross the wooden bridge, clear the forest check post, and step through the gate into what feels genuinely like another world.
  • The valley stretches 6–7 km before you. Wander as far as your stamina allows. You'll pass through zones of blue poppy, Himalayan rose, Brahma Kamal, and balsam — colours so vivid they look unreal in the monsoon mist.
  • At the 5 km mark, the blooms give way to a glacier and the Pushpawati widens. Sit beside the river. Let the silence — broken only by birdsong and flowing water — do its work.
  • On a clear day, the pyramid peaks of Gauri Parbat and Nilgiri Parvat emerge above the valley walls. Before sunset, we trek back to Ghangaria for a well-earned dinner.

Stay: Guest House, Ghangaria   |   Meals: Breakfast + Packed Lunch + Evening Snacks + Dinner   |   Altitude: Valley 14,100 ft / Ghangaria 10,003 ft   |   Distance: 8 km (both sides)   |   Duration: ~6–7 hrs

  • An early start. Today's destination is sacred — Hemkund Sahib, the world's highest Gurudwara at 15,000 ft / 4,329 m. You don't need to be Sikh to feel the power of this place.
  • The 6 km ascent climbs steadily above the tree line, passing tea stalls and dhabas en route. As you approach 4,000 m, the trail transforms: Brahma Kamal blooms appear on every rocky ledge, and the air grows thin and luminous.
  • The climb takes 3–4 hours. At the top, seven snow-draped peaks ring a glacial lake of mirror-still water. The Gurudwara gleams white against the rock. Take langar from the Gurudwara committee — simple, warm, and offered with devotion.
  • On clear days, the reflections of the Saptrishi peaks in the lake are so perfect they look painted. Adjacent to the lake lies the serene Laxman Sanctuary — add it to your walk if time allows.
  • Weather shifts quickly at altitude. We descend to Ghangaria by evening, where a hot meal and a warm bed end the most spiritually charged day of the trek.

Stay: Guest House, Ghangaria   |   Meals: Breakfast + Packed Lunch + Snacks + Dinner   |   Altitude: Hemkund Sahib 15,000 ft / Ghangaria 10,003 ft   |   Distance: 6 km (one side)   |   Duration: ~7–8 hrs

  • After breakfast, we begin our descent the same trail, but somehow a different trek. Familiar mountains, but now they feel like old friends. The 9 km walk back to Poolna passes quickly, energy buoyed by the memories you're carrying down.
  • From Govindghat, we drive back to Joshimath. From here, Badrinath is just 25 km away. Weather and road conditions permitting, we'll make a stop the ancient Vishnu shrine backed by Neelkantha peak is worth every extra kilometre.
  • Important: The Govindghat–Badrinath route can be susceptible to landslides during heavy monsoon. Your trek leader's call on safety is final if conditions are unsafe, we return directly to Pipalkoti.
  • Evening in Joshimath. Explore the local market, visit the Adi Shankaracharya Math, or simply sit by a window and watch the last light drain off the peaks.

Stay: Hotel, Joshimath   |   Meals: Breakfast + Packed Lunch + Snacks + Dinner   |   Altitude: 6,150 ft   |   Distance: Trek 9 km + Road 24 km   |   Duration: ~6–7 hrs trek, 1 hr drive

  • 6 AM departure. The mountains are still dark when you leave, and that's fitting you've earned the right to watch the Himalayas light up as you drive away.
  • The 250 km drive back to Rishikesh retraces the same road — the same confluences, the same river gorges, the same mountain villages but everything looks slightly different when you've spent six days above the clouds.
  • Stop for breakfast and lunch en route at your own expense. Taste the local hill cuisine one last time. Arrive in Rishikesh between 6–7 PM.
  • The Valley of Flowers Trek is over. But the blue poppies, the Brahma Kamal, the glacial silence of Hemkund those stay with you.

Meals: Tea / Cookies   |   Distance: 250 km by road   |   Duration: ~9–10 hrs drive
